Introducing Nurofen

Nurofen - who are we?

Like so many people, you probably recognise the famous Nurofen target. Nurofen is also the number one selling branded oral pain-reliever. Find out more below...

The inventors of ibuprofen

It was in the 1960s that 3 colleagues from Boots Pharmaceuticals developed ibuprofen – the active ingredient in Nurofen. In 1969 ibuprofen was introduced as a prescription only medicine for treating arthritic pain and other inflammatory conditions.

However,  it gained a reputation as an effective pain-reliever as well as an anti-inflammatory and in August 1983 it was launched as an over-the-counter medicine in the UK under the name of Nurofen. The brand is now owned by Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare (UK) Ltd.

A first for children

As well as discovering ibuprofen, Nurofen was also the first to develop over the counter ibuprofen-based pain-relief for babies and children – launched as Nurofen for Children in 1998 in the UK. Ibuprofen suspension gives fast, effective relief from pain and the discomfort of fever for children as young as three months (providing baby weighs more than 5kg).
