Information on Tension Headaches

What you need to know

In this modern world we live in there’s always so many things to do and so many people to see it’s no wonder that many people suffer from tension headaches. Here you’ll discover more about tension headaches and how to manage them:

What is a tension headache?

A tension headache is a dull, aching pain experienced on both sides of the head. Many sufferers say it feels like a tight band around the head or a heavy pressure pressing down on them.

What causes tension headaches?

Tension headaches can be caused by stress, skipping meals, tiredness, eye strain or poor posture resulting in tense neck muscles.

How can you help prevent tension headaches?

Try learning certain techniques to help calm you in times of stress. A gym instructor or your doctor should be able to show you some simple breathing techniques. You could also take up a meditation class. Exercising is another good way to manage your stresses and strains. It releases “feel good” chemicals (called endorphins) that can help boost your mood and clear your mind.

Should you be concerned about tension headaches?

Most tension headaches are not a sign of something more serious. But do speak to a doctor if:
  • You suddenly develop serve or frequent headaches
  • You get visual disturbances
  • You develop headaches, or your headaches change, after starting the contraceptive pill
  • You think your headache is related to a blow or injury
